I have had a couple of discussions with different persons recently about copyright laws. When someone else created and published something, when is it okay to use it without obtaining their permission? My understanding is, anything that was originally published prior to 1923 is public domain. If something was published between 1923 and 1963, the creator of the work was required to apply for an extension to continue their copyright. If they did not file for the extension, their work is public domain. However, if they did file, it has a 95 year copyright. So, in 2018, the 1923 work will become public domain.

Anything published after 1963 has an automatic 95 year copyright protection.
